Naturopathic and nutritional care for bloating

Bloating seems like a single issue, but it’s caused by a number of potential drivers

Bloating looks identical from the outside no matter what’s causing it, which is exactly why random elimination or supplementation often fails. The main drivers are genuinely different, and as such they need different treatment:

• Fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAPs): drawing water into the bowel and feeding rapid fermentation

• Constipation: including the kind you don’t recognise, where you go daily but never fully empty

• Visceral hypersensitivity: gut nerves that signal loudly at normal volumes of gas

• Abdomino-phrenic dyssynergia: a muscle reflex that pushes the abdomen out regardless of gas volume

• Microbial factors: including small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in the right clinical picture

You can end up cutting the wrong foods for the wrong driver resulting in restriction without relief. I’ve explained each of these in detail here.

So, you cut out gluten. Then dairy. Then onion and garlic. You’ve tried the probiotic someone recommended, the digestive enzymes, the apple cider vinegar. Your list of “safe” foods keeps shrinking, and yet you’re still loosening your waistband by 3pm.

If that’s where you are, the problem usually isn’t willpower or discipline. It’s that you’re treating a symptom without knowing what’s causing it.

How I work with bloating

We start with data, not guessing. Before we change anything, I want to see how your symptoms are showing up; timing relative to meals, bowel patterns, stress, sleep, and cycle. Many patterns show up in a week of tracking that might never show up from memory.

A full history. Your medical background, previous investigations, medications, what you’ve already tried and how your body responded. Often the most useful clue is buried in something that was previously dismissed.

Testing only where it changes the plan. I’ll recommend functional testing when the clinical picture warrants it and the result would alter what we do. More on how I use testing.

Treatment built on nutrition first. If a structured dietary process is appropriate, we run it properly, including the reintroduction phase most people skip, so you finish with more foods you can eat, not fewer. Herbal medicine and targeted supplements come in where the evidence supports them for your specific presentation.

Changes that fit your actual week. A plan you can’t sustain long-term isn’t a plan. We build around your routine, your cooking capacity, and your household.

What working together looks like

Your initial consultation is a thorough investigation; history, symptoms, diet, lifestyle, review of any existing test results, followed by a written treatment plan personalised to you. Follow-ups track what’s shifting and adjust accordingly.

Most people notice meaningful change within the first few weeks, though the timeline depends on what’s driving your symptoms and how long it’s been going on. I’ll be transparent with you about expectations at your first appointment.

Consultations are online via video call, Australia-wide. Current fees and what’s included are here..

If you’re not ready to book, start with the free 7-Day Digestive Pattern Tracker; five minutes a day, and you’ll know more about your own patterns than most people manage in years.

When to see your GP first

Bloating deserves medical assessment before naturopathic and nutritional care if you have: unintended weight loss, blood in your stool, symptoms that wake you at night, fever, new/sudden onset after age 50, or a family history of bowel or ovarian cancer. These need to be ruled out properly, and I’ll refer you if anything in your history suggests they should be assessed further.
